Striking A Balance Caregiver Conference

The 15th Annual Striking A Balance Caregiver Conference was held on Saturday, August 20th, at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Austin (6505 N Interstate Hwy 35, Austin, TX 78752), from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  AGE of Central Texas and the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area come together every year to co-host the  largest, longest-run free caregiver conference in Central Texas.

During this free annual conference, family caregivers discover local resources, learn new skills to meet the needs of their caregiving situation, and connect with other caregivers and local experts on aging. The day also includes a keynote talk by a nationally-renown expert in aging and caregiver concerns, workshops on topics related to caregiving with experts available for questions, along with a complimentary lunch and opportunities to visit with leading senior services non-profit organizations and companies.

2016 Keynote Speaker: Cara L. Magrane

"A Caregiver’s Journey: From Advocacy to Caregiving and Back"

Keynote speaker Cara L. Magrane brings a wealth of caregiver knowledge to the 15th Annual "Striking a Balance" Caregiver Conference.  Her presentation will offer tips and resources to help you navigate your caregiving experience.

Born and raised in Lynn, Massachusetts, Cara achieved her B.A. in Sociology from Manhattanville College, Purchase, New York, a Level I Certificate in Child Care Administration from San Antonio College, and her M.B.A. from the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Center for Professional Excellence. 

After college, Cara spent a year with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in service to Respite Care of San Antonio, Inc. (RCSA).  Cara “fell in love with their mission” and has remained at RCSA for more than 22 years. Cara currently serves as Respite Care’s Chief Operating Officer and is the Licensed Administrator overseeing all daily and programmatic operations.

Cara is active with many Boards and Advisory Committees that advocate for children with disabilities and prevention of child abuse, including Alamo Area Council of Governments Planning Advisory Council, Centro Med-Health Care for the Homeless, and the Texas Respite Network.  Cara is also a member of the Texas Lyceum.

Cara is married to Jose F. Gonzalez, a Special Education Teacher in the Harlandale I.S.D.; they have two boys.
